The following is a recap from the 2023/24 school year:
Our 2nd Annual Eagle Mile took place on Monday, June 17, 2024. During each of the 3 specialist's time for grades 3-5, a 1-mile cross-country style race was completed. In each race, the top-3 boys and girls were presented medals. The top class with the lowest average time from all 3 races was determined the Team Champions! Here are the 2024 RESULTS! For All-Time bests, click here.
In June, there are a variety of factors that influence what we do in PE. With summer around the corner, I strive to give classes at least 1 "free choice" day where they are able to pick an individual or whole group activity of their choice. Aside from this, the following is a list of activities that will be included in part of instruction by grade level:
Grade 5 - Jr. Olympic event practice (shuttle relay).
Grades 3-5 - Eagle Mile practice and 1-lap run on track for time,
Grades K-2 - Parachute and fox tail.
Grades K-5 - Tug-of-War and racquet sport (badminton, pickleball or tennis)
The 4th and final travelling PE unit that Chinook will receive this year is the bowling unit. The goal for this unit is to have fun while knocking down pins!
Check out this lesson created by Magic School.
The goal of this unit is to focus on the basic fundamentals of kicking, dribbling, and passing. Students will also participate in a series of small-sided and whole group games. Check out this video for the 10 most common beginner mistakes. The challenge for the month is soccer juggling. Results will be posted here and on the PE Wall.
Grades 3-5 will also begin their post-assessment in the following 4 areas: pacer, push-up, curl-up and sit-&-reach. Scores will be recorded on WELNET.
In January, the Seattle Kraken made a floorball donation to all schools in Auburn, K-8. These kits will allow our students to experience hockey, many for the first time! Students will learn to control the ball with the stick, strike for accuracy and small-sided games.
The 2 jump rope challenges from early April (criss-cross & speed jumping) have been extended to allow more students to practice and make improvements. Students may submit scores as part of their PE warm-up or during recess.
During our rotating fitness unit, students will focus on ways they can engage in physical exercise at recess. On the playground, students will be shown how to use the play structure to perform various exercises. Students will also be introduced to jump roping. There are 2 challenges for the unit: speed jumping (how many jumps performed in 30 seconds) and criss-cross jump rope (standard = 10 or more jumps).
Students in grades 4-5 will go over the 5th grade CBA results and discuss health related fitness components.
During our volleyball unit, students will be taught how to underhand serve, set, and bump. As the weather gets warmer, students will have an opportunity to practice at recess on dry days. The challenge for this unit will be a group activity: in a circle or with a partner, how many consecutive hits (bumps and sets) can you and your team complete.
Students in grades 4-5 will be introduced to the 5th grade CBA.
K-3 students will partake in the Drums Alive curriculum, where they will learn to maintain the beat with drumsticks and physio balls. Classes will be paired up so that students receive 2 practice sessions a week. Songs learned include: "Starships," "Party Rock," and "Can-Can"
K-5 students will be introduced, or reintroduced, to the sport of cup stacking, also known as "sport stacking." Typically this activity is taught close to basketball as both sports require a significant amount of hand-eye coordination. Numerous basketball players have attributed cup stacking as the reason for giving them that "extra edge" in terms of ball handling skills.
Students will learned the "3-6-3 Stack" and various team games using the JUMBO CUPS! Students who were able to perform the 3-6-3 in under 10 seconds are recognized on the PE Wall here.
Chinook's boy's & girl's basketball teams begin practice in January with games scheduled against teams from other schools in February. In PE, students K-5 will learn the basic fundamentals of dribbling, passing & shooting.
Students in grades 2-5 will also be partaking in their mid-year Pacer test.
After returning from Winter Break, grades 2-5 participated in "Minute to Win It" mini game challenges. K-1 students learned how to build hula huts.
Students will partake in a variety of tag and cooperative games with a "Winter Wonderland" theme.
Auburn School District has a rotating system in place where all elementary schools share PE equipment. Chinook's 2nd round of equipment includes gymnastics. For 4 weeks, students practice a variety of skills related to balancing & tumbling such as: cartwheels, somersaults, handstands and back bridges. Students are encouraged to continue practicing push-ups, stretching and working on their grip by hanging from a monkey bar or pull-up bar daily! Challenges for this unit include: handstand (2 seconds), hanging for time on pull-up bar (1 minute), standing long jump (PR).
In acknowledgement of Veterans Day, students will partake in team games with a Veterans Day theme for part of class. Students will also be given time to better their pogo stick scores from the Circus Arts unit.
Our 1st rotating travelling equipment that our school receives from the district includes circus arts. In this unit, students will work independently and in small groups in a variety of stations which include the following: flower sticks, the diablo, juggling, stilts, pogo sticks, and balance boards. Check out this video for a tutorial on how to do the "3-ball cascade" juggle. The challenge for the month will be to see how many times you can do the pogo stick.
With such a wide range of skills in every class, the focus for this unit will be for students to work on their throwing and catching skills. Students will know how to properly hold & throw a football as well as catch from different levels.
PARENTS: At home, please practice throwing and catching with your child. Even if you don't have a football, practicing throwing and catching with a soft object can help enhance your child's hand-eye coordination. If they are struggling with catching, start with underhand tossing and gradually increase the distance and direction of tosses as they get better. Make a game out of it!
In grades 3-5, students partake in 4 fitness assessments twice a year. Their results are uploaded to a program called WELNET immediately upon completion and can be accessed at home.
Grades K-2 will continue recess games as well as various tag games. Grades 2-5 will do the Pacer Test three times a year (September, January and May). For the Top-100 list, visit the PE Wall page.
During the first few weeks of school, our students learn about recess games. We learn how to "Rock, Paper, Scissor" and problem solve on our own while playing at recess. Activities taught include the following:
4-square, tetherball, kickball and variations of these games.
