About ML Lab 3

MLL Lab 3 is a Designated English Language Development (ELD) course designed to address the specific ELD needs of students in the intermediate to low-advanced levels of English language proficiency.

From the course catalog: Class is designed to support students in their first year placed in a general education ELA course, with extended learning opportunities that parallel ninth grade language arts curriculum.

The structure of this course is designed to be flexible- to address the needs of the students currently enrolled in the class. As a result, some topics at the discourse, sentence, and/or word/phrase level will take less or more time depending on where your students are in their English language learning journey. With that in mind, Quarter 1 is a review of grammar that is taught in MLL 201/202. Quarters 2-4 cover the grammar taught in MLL 301/302. The topics listed in Quarter 1 should be covered prior to moving on to the topics in Quarters 2-4.

In contrast, the key language focus for each quarter should correspond to the key language use being addressed in the students’ general education or special education ELA course. It is not required that you use the same text as the students’ ELA course(s), but rather that instruction focuses on the same skill or use of language. Use of text other than that used in the students’ ELA course should be limited to short stories and informative passages- not additional novels. It is advisable to consult with the students’ ELA teacher(s) as this course is a concurrent offering and is designed to support their learning.
