About Level 1

MLL 101/102 is a sheltered English Language Arts course designed to address the specific English Language Development (ELD) needs of students in the beginning stages of English language proficiency (ELP).


From the course catalog: Designed for students whose first language is other than English, these courses stress listening, speaking, reading, and writing of English. Students will learn English pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension skills, grammar, as well as general survival skills and study skills. A variety of language experiences will be utilized to facilitate the process of language acquisition. Instructional materials are chosen/developed to meet the needs/skill levels of individual students.


This document describes the scope and sequence of English Language Arts content topics taught in this course, including a placement assessment in Quarter 3 and common assessments in each quarter. In addition, this document provides guidance on the language forms and convention, vocabulary usage and linguistic complexity that should be covered in this course. It is advisable to consult with the students’ MLL Lab 1 teacher(s) as this course is a concurrent offering.


Grading:

Grades are based on the following weighted categories:


A 92.5 – 100% C+ 77.5 – 79.9%

A- 90 – 92.4% C 72.5 – 77.4%

B+ 87.5 – 89.9% C- 70 – 72.4%

B 82.5 – 87.4% D+ 67.5 – 69.9%

B- 80 – 82.4% D 60 – 67.4%


C+        77.5 – 79.9%

C          72.5 – 77.4%

C-        70 – 72.4%

D+       67.5 – 69.9%

D         60 – 67.4%

E        50 – 59.9%
