RUSH WEEK

By Ruby Copeland

RUSH Week is a fundraiser week at Atoka High School to raise money for an important cause in our community. Every day after school, there will be an event where everyone can pay to either play or watch. Atoka started this newly founded tradition in 2021, and it turned out overwhelmingly successful. RUSH sweatshirts are also sold throughout the school every year. This year, we are raising money for a local family in need, and are putting the sweatshirt money towards a cancer organization.

AHS Teacher Spotlight

Ms. Wirtz

By Rafaela Waller

This month's teacher spotlight is Ms. Alyssa Wirtz. Ms. Wirtz graduated from Boone-Apache High School in Apache, OK, in 2017. She then went on to graduate from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK, in 2021 with a Bachelor of Music Education. This is her third year teaching. Ms.Wirtz completed her student teaching at Bixby PS and taught at Geronimo PS before coming to Atoka. Her hobbies include making music and bringing broken instruments back to life. She also enjoys spending time with friends, playing video games, creating art, and reading a good book.

Ms. Wirtz loved the idea of joining the Air Force but never could quite envision herself being in it. Her whole family has served or is currently serving in the Air Force, so being the only one to choose not to do so is a weird feeling for her. As far as regrets go, there are times when she feels like she made the right choice by pursuing a music education degree and becoming an educator. On the flip side, there are times when she feels like by not enlisting, she cut off a part of the community that she was raised in as a military kid. "In the end, we are the choices we make, and I'm sure I'd be a much different person today if I enlisted in the military after high school instead of pursuing a postsecondary degree." We're happy that Ms. Wirtz's life choices brought her to us, and we're proud she's a part of our Wampus Cat team!
