Introduction to Angklung Playing
Ensemble Playing
This course explores the rich musical heritage of Asia, with a special focus on the traditional and contemporary music of Indonesia, Malaysia, and China, through the versatile medium of the ukulele. Students will learn fundamental and intermediate ukulele techniques, including chord progressions, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, and ensemble playing. The program integrates music theory and cultural studies, guiding learners to perform authentic folk melodies and adapt them for the ukulele while maintaining their cultural essence.
By studying gamelan-inspired textures from Indonesia, pentatonic and gong-based melodies from Malaysia, and Chinese modal systems, students will gain a deeper appreciation for Asia’s diverse musical identities. Listening activities, group performance projects, and creative arrangements will foster both technical skill and cultural literacy. The course aims to develop well-rounded musicians who can interpret and share Asian music traditions with respect, creativity, and a global perspective.
