Why are we switching to Google Chat?
Google Hangouts will be replaced by Google Chat at the end of the year 2021. To see the timeline, please refer to this link: Google Chat Upgrade Timeline
What is the difference between a Group Chat and Room in Google Chat?
Where do I find my old chats?
You can continue recent conversations from classic Hangouts in Google Chat. Over time, older conversations from classic Hangouts will also migrate to Google Chat.
All previous chat history from classic Hangouts will be accessible in Gmail.
The classic Hangouts web interface for chat, hangouts.google.com will remain available during this transition but you can’t use classic Hangouts by visiting hangouts.google.com in a mobile browser.
Transition period will be until May 14, 2021. Starting May 15, Google Hangouts will no longer be available.
What are the limitations of Chat?
If you start rooms in Chat with the option for threaded conversations, these rooms will not appear to people who still use classic Hangouts.
Turning chat notifications off from Gmail will also turn off notifications in the Chat app. If you want to continue to get chat message notifications from the Chat app but not receive them in Gmail, you have to turn desktop notifications off from Gmail.
The number of participants you can have in a Chat room depends on the room type.

I am an obf.ateneo.edu user. Why can't I start a chat with an ateneo.edu user?
We currently have an issue due to how our domains (ateneo.edu/obf.ateneo.edu) were set up. For now, the ateneo.edu user must initiate the chat so that the obf.ateneo.edu user can converse with the ateneo.edu user.
