Overview:
In Arizona, teachers' aides are also commonly called paraprofessionals. Paraprofessionals may be classified according to grade-level or the type of students they will be working with. A large part of their duties involves monitoring student behavior while outside the classroom, during lunch breaks or recess. Paraprofessional who work with children in special education classes might also be responsible for helping students with meals and other functional tasks. There is no certification required to become a Paraprofessional, however, the hiring District may require additional criteria to be met.

Interested candidates must obtain a high school diploma, GED, or associate's degree in order to be eligible for a paraprofessional position.
Paraprofessionals works under the supervision of a certified teacher.
Overview:
A Non-Teacher of Record, sometimes referred to as an Associate Teacher or a Paid Student Teacher, is a two semester/yearlong commitment. Participants actively work with a team of colleagues, students, and a lead/mentor teacher to build a repertoire of research-based knowledge and effective teaching practices. The Student Teacher may take on various assigned instructional processes and content roles such as lesson planning, large-group instruction, small-group instruction, individual interventions, data analysis, grading, and other non-instructional tasks.
Key Points:
Monday-Friday, Full Time (8 hours per day).
Two semester/yearlong commitment.

Overview:
Emergency certificates may be issued at the request of a district or charter school superintendent when an emergency employment situation exists. These certificates are limited to the district or charter school requesting the certificate. An individual holding only an Emergency Substitute Certificate shall not be assigned a contract teaching position and shall be limited to 120 days of substitute teaching in the same school each school year. The certificate is valid for two school years or part thereof and expires on the July 1 of the year of expiration.

The Emergency Substitute Certificate entitles the holder to substitute in the temporary absence of the certified teacher.
Emergency Substitute Certificate holders are limited to 120 days of substitute teaching in the same school per school year.
The application for this certificate, A Request for Issuance of the Emergency Substitute Certificate, must be signed by a District or Charter School Superintendent and is only available at the District or School.
Applicants must meet all appropriate requirements for initial issuance or re-issuance.
The Emergency Substitute Certificate is valid for 2 years or part thereof and expires on July 1 in the year of expiration.

Overview:
The Student Teaching Intern Certificate allows students to work in classrooms under the supervision of experienced educators in order to gain practical teaching experience before becoming fully licensed teachers. To Obtain a Student Teaching Intern Certificate, students must have taken and passed the Professional Knowledge and Subject Area test prior to starting the certificate request process. Students must be in the final stages (Term 8) of their Teacher Preparation Program.

Special Education positions are not eligible for Student Teaching Intern Certificate
Passing scores on Professional Knowledge and Subject Area Exam
3.0 GPA per Arizona Department of Education
Overview:
The Alternative Teaching certificate is valid for two years and may be extended yearly for no more than two consecutive years. The certificate entitles the holder to enter into a teaching contract while completing the requirements for an Arizona Standard Professional teaching certificate. The candidate shall be enrolled in an Arizona State Board-authorized alternative path to the certification program, or an Arizona State Board-approved teacher preparation program.
Key Points:
An individual is not eligible to hold the Alternative Teaching certificate more than once in five years.
Applicants who are seeking an Alternative Teaching Certificate that reflects the certification area they are qualified to teach, must meet the subject knowledge exam requirement for the Standard Professional Teaching Certificate they are pursuing.
Applicants who do not meet the subject knowledge exam requirement may qualify for an Alternative Teaching Certificate that does not show a certification area.

The application for this certificate, A Request for Issuance of the Emergency Teaching Certificate, must be signed by a District or Charter School Superintendent and is only available at the District or School.
Applicants must meet all appropriate requirements for initial issuance or re-issuance.
As of August 9, 2017 Emergency Teaching Certificates are no longer issues for Special Education Teaching Certificates.
Overview:
The Substitute certificate entitles the holder to substitute in the temporary absence of a regular contract teacher. The certificate is valid for 6 years and is renewable.
Key Points:
The Substitute Certificate entitles the holder to substitute in any Pre-K -12th grade classroom.
The Substitute Certificate is not limited to one specific District or Charter.
There are no restrictions on how many times the certificate can be renewed.
Certificate holder must have a Bachelor's Degree or higher.
