Student Placement FAQ's
We aim to provide you with a diverse experience in classroom placements. While we strive to place you in a preferred school, it is never guaranteed. PES will work hard to find a placement that meets your ASU program’s requirements in one of your preferred districts.
You're welcome to request a specific school but we can't guarantee that we can confirm that placement there because placements are confirmed through the district.
There are many different requirements for a variety of placements, here are a few common ones:
Student teaching- 5 days a week full time for 15 weeks (follow mentor’s contract hours).
75 hour internship - 5 to 6 hours per week (once a week) for 15 weeks.
60 hour internship - 4 to 5 hours per week (once a week) for 15 weeks.
45 hour internship - 3 to 4 hours per week (once a week) for 15 weeks.
20 hour observation - 4 visits at 5 hours
The Professional Education Services will not secure paid placements for students. PES offers support in finding a Job Embedded Professional Experience. Placement Coordinators will support by providing assistance and resources for finding or continuing with a paid position that aligns with your specific program and career aspirations, essentially making your transition into the education field a seamless and rewarding experience.
You can schedule a meeting with our Placement Coordinator Team to acquire more information. Calendly Link!
The PES Team will start reviewing your placement request form as soon as we receive it. Our team strives to confirm your placement before the semester starts.
Yes, as long as the district and mentor teacher agrees to host students. Please keep in mind the placement must meet the student’s program requirements.
Unfortunately, Preschool cannot count for more than one internship. Early Childhood students can use their preschool placement while taking their ECD 567 Class.
Students who have limited transportation must add this information under additional placement detail in their Placement request form. Our Team will work on finding a placement that meets their needs to assure student success.
There is an Additional placement detail section in their placement request form, placement coordinators will read the section and try to meet the students needs and request if these are feasible.
Job Embedded FAQ's
The Professional Education Services will not secure job embedded placements for students. Students who are interested in using a job embedded position for their professional experience are responsible for securing their own position within their desired school district. All job embedded positions must match the student's educational program in order to qualify.
UIA stands for University Internship Agreement. The purpose of the University Internship Agreement is to ensure that all parties involved are aware of the expectations and responsibilities that their role entails.
In order for a job-embedded position to qualify for a student’s professional experience, it must fall within the student’s program of study. Students must be placed with a mentor teacher who has a minimum of three years of experience and a valid teaching certificate in the student's area of study. Additionally, students must obtain a GPA of no less than 2.5 and have no prior dismissals.
After a student has secured a job-embedded position the Placement Coordinator will do an initial verification of the placement to determine if it meets the criteria for the students program.
Following the verification process, the student will receive an email with the steps to complete the University Internship Agreement (UIA). The University Internship Agreement must be completed by the student and verified through their email before it will be sent out for additional signatures.
Once all participants have signed the UIA, the Placement Coordinator will verify the information before it is approved.
Students will not be placed in the student management system “Sonia” until their University Internship Agreement is submitted and approved.
Once you have submitted your University Internship Agreement via Adobe sign, you will receive a verification email. Students must verify their forms through this email before it will be sent to recipients to be signed. Many times if students have their ASU email forwarded to their personal email or designated district email, the verification email can get lost in their SPAM folder. Students are highly encouraged to change their email settings before beginning and submitting their University Internship Agreement.
To do this, you will need to log into your MyASU account, click on the “profile” tab and select email. You will then click on the link to manage your ASU email address.
There are many reasons why a job embedded position may be rejected. One of the most common reasons is because the mentor teacher doesn’t meet the criteria. If this happens, you can see if another mentor is available to host in the same subject area. If there isn’t anyone on campus that is available to host we can move forward with an unpaid traditional placement. Other situations may require you to reach out to your Placement Coordinator to find out what your next steps are.
It is not uncommon for students to experience changes in their placements. Any changes that occur during your placement needs to be communicated with your Placement Coordinator immediately. Students may be required to submit a new University Internship Agreement with the new changes before the placement can be updated in Sonia.
Some additional responsibilities include lunch duty, yard supervision, after-school/before-school supervision, club/sports moderator, IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, back-to-school night, curriculum night, PTA events, professional developments, etc.
-Location (consider driving time)
-Resources (what does the school or district provide teachers with)
-Mentorship (does the district have a new teacher induction program, how often will you be meeting with your mentor, will the mentor be in the same grade level, will you be working with a grade level team, does the district offer any other mentorship oportunities)
-Onboarding (with a paid placement you will most likely be required to start when the other teachers start and you may have to attend begining of the year training for your district)
-Type of curriculum (Does the district provide you with the curriculum you will teach or are you responsible for creating and finding your own curriculum?)
Title I is a federal education program that supports low income students throughout the nation. Funds are distributed to high poverty schools, as determined by the number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The funds can be used to hire additional teachers or teaching assistants, to provide computers or software, to fund before, after and summer school programs, and to purchase additional materials or equipment.
Hours will only be counted during the official Start and End dates for placement classes; however, paid positions typically follow the School/District calender. As such, students should discuss the specific start and end dates of positions with the individuals schools.
Connect with your Placement Coordinator or Experience Coordinator. Depending on the reason why, you may be able to receive an exception.
General FAQ's
Mentor teachers have a lot going on. So keep in mind breaks (holidays and summer) play a factor in this. Be patient. If you have not heard from your mentor teacher after emailing, reach out again and be sure you are emailing from your ASU email! (personal emails get caught in school filters) If by the first day of classes (after you have emailed twice) you have not heard back, reach out to MLFTC-PES@asu.edu and let us know.
Start with touching base with your mentor teacher to see if you can adjust your days for attending. (You need to be open to the fact that some days are ½ days and can not be an internship day.) If after you reach out they are still not able to accommodate, reach out to your instructor and let them know what is going on. If after you reach out and nothing can be resolved, contact PES at MLFTC-PES@asu.edu to discuss the issue.
PES policy states if your placement must be within 25 miles of your home campus. If there are circumstances beyond your control and the placement is still too far, please contact your Placement Coordinator.
Have your willing mentor reach out to their HR to let them know they would like to host you. We cannot promise you will be placed with a specific mentor as there are many parts that go into securing a placement.
Reach out to your placement coordinator and let them know you would like to use a job-embedded placement.
Have your mentor reach out to MLFTCTechOps@asu.edu. We cannot resolve login issues with anyone other than the account holder.
You can login to your Sonia Online account, click on the “Forms” tab (which takes several moments to load) and look at the list of forms that are available. Completed forms will have a large, green circle with a checkmark on them. If you still do not see them, make sure the "Hide Completed Forms" button in the top right is unchecked.
