Internships serve as guided experiential learning opportunities to expose teacher candidates to schools, K-12 classrooms, and high-quality mentor teachers. Throughout these internship experiences, interns will have the opportunity to engage with K-12 students under the direction of a mentor. In addition to observing high-quality teaching, interns will plan and facilitate both small group and whole-class instruction.
This professional experience is a full-time semester-long commitment to progressively assume all of the responsibilities of being a teacher while being supported by an ASU student teaching supervisor and a high-quality site-based mentor teacher. The student teaching experience is designed to support and assist teacher candidates as they apply theory into practice, discuss and generate solutions for real-time instructional and classroom dilemmas, and collaborate professionally with peers and engage in reflective practice.
Job-embedded/Paid placements are designed for students who are currently working full-time as the teacher of record in their classroom. This professional experience will concentrate on developing teaching and management skills through daily teaching and learning. Through collaboration, reflective practices, and practical application of coursework, apprentice teachers will develop and refine their teaching skills.
Teacher candidates in dual placements will participate in the same core experiences as those in single placements, including planning, instruction, feedback, and evaluation. However, there are a few key differences—dual placement candidates split their time between two classroom settings or grade levels, which may impact scheduling and how responsibilities are shared. While the structure is slightly different, the expectations for growth, professionalism, and active engagement remain the same.
