The Education in Society domain addresses the functions, values, and impact of education in diverse communities. The main skills addressed through this domain are students’ abilities to (1) compare and contrast education across multiple populations and settings; (2) persuasively articulate connections between multiple values for education and specific educational environments/settings; and (3) participate in informed debate related to fundamental questions about social justice, equity, opportunity, and fairness in education.
Course: TEL 111: Exploration of Education
Description: Current Trends in Education-
Purpose: To explore current trends that are affecting educational environments, present opposing sides on the topic, and develop a critical voice about the topic.
Task: Selecting a current issue in the field of education, sharing opposing perspectives of the current issue, and how to increase the quality of education for all students in our nation.
Representation: Through this work, I was able to compare and contrast the functions of education across populations and settings and articulate insights into own cultural rules and biases about education.
Application: In this experience, I had to analyze problems and brainstorm potential solutions to how poverty impacts a student's education, which is useful when I am mentoring children who are facing adversity.
