Bamyan girls were able to break many taboos and encourage others to fight for their rights by participating in sports and cycling competitions. The return of the Taliban regime halted all of these activities and girls lost their basic human rights including education. (Band e Amir in the Bamyan province, June 2021)

Skiing was one of the most popular winter sports before the Taliban took over Bamyan. The province played host to many winter sports championships every winter.
