Bamyan University was one of the leading public universities in the central highland of Afghanistan. It was established in the mid-1990s but closed after a few short years when the Taliban took over Bamyan. The university was refurbished and reopened in 2004 following the ouster of the Taliban three years earlier. It offered educational access to thousands of students, female and male, from different parts of Afghanistan until the Taliban returned to power in August of 2021 and placed restrictions on the education of girls and women.
