The mission of Design.Build.Grow.Eat. is to help teens see their environment - their connection to it, and their impact on it.
DBGE empowers youth to work with community stakeholders on how to improve green spaces, while making the connection between growing and preparing food, linking the farm to the table.
DBGE introduces community farming through the inclusion of on-site urban garden plots. But while working remotely this summer due to the pandemic, we garden more at home. Teens learn about the process of farming and the concept of whole food - strengthening their knowledge of the environment and their ability to make a positive impact on it to create peace and produce!
Teens gain technical skills in scale drawing, designing, identification of plant parts, digging a hole (and much more), while learning the ways food is sourced, and whether all food is local, especially in city centers (and other aspects of food justice).
Emphasis is placed on learning about where our food comes from, both from the ground, and from our family food traditions. We learn about ourselves when we learn about why we eat what we eat, and we build community when we make and share our food with each other.
