Identity Theft

In 2021, the FTC received 1,434,695 reports of identity theft. This made up nearly 1/4 of all fraud complaints received.

In this unit, students watch "Catch Me If You Can", a glamorized version of the true story of Frank Abignale Jr.

Abignale, now a leading expert for the FBI and governments around the world, began his trail of bank fraud at the age of 17.

After viewing and discussing the film, students will read and respond to identity theft from the viewpoint of its victims as well as learn more about how con artists are successful in committing fraud. Students will define essential terms and include at least one of these terms in their identity theft project. The project will take the form of either a newspaper article or an advertisement poster.
