Budgeting and Credit

Semester 2 is here! To start the semester, we will be doing a unit that includes budgeting, student loan repayment, and credit.

Thursday: Can you name the three most popular New Year's Resolutions from the past 2 years? We will discuss whether making resolutions are a good idea, how they factor into our financial lives, and strategies for keeping resolutions whenever they are made. We will also play a FinCap Friday.

Friday: As a class, we will play Money Magic, a game where we will help Enzo budget his magic business and save for his big chance to perform in Las Vegas.  Along the way we will learn about tracking expenses, needs versus wants, and the role of happiness in planning your budget.

January 9-13 we will immerse ourselves in budgeting.  In Budgeting 101, we will discuss why you should budget, gross pay versus net pay, and compare our needs versus our wants.  We will end by discussing an example of a new job and the needs that come along with being a professional. In Budgeting Strategies, we will read an article about 4 popular budgeting methods, the 4 types of expenses, and discuss the resurgence of envelope stuffing (which is trending on social media).  We will wrap the week with a deep dive into budgeting for specific expenses like housing, transportation, and food.

January 16-20 we will wrap up budgeting.  On Tuesday, students will have a choice to learn about budgeting for transportation OR budgeting for food. They will do this by following the link here or by going to join.nearpod.com and entering X7NPY for food or NAH6R for transportation. Students will complete all questions in the nearpod AND the activity for the chosen lesson on paper. This is due by the end of class Wednesday. On Thursday, students will learn the impact of the gig economy on budgeting and how to make it work. Friday we will close out budgeting with a discussion of student loan repayment plans.  Next Monday, students will create a budget as a class for a starting salary to assess what they have learned.
