Work Completion/Due Dates
Teachers will communicate desired or expected due dates for student work to be completed and submitted. This is especially important when the concept or content is necessary for success on future activities. Any late work policies should be reconsidered in support of students and this opportunity to both catch up and make learning progress. Late work policies must be communicated to students and families up front and have the support of school administration.
Reporting
Feedback to students is an essential part of the Continuous Learning Program per guidance from OSPI.
K-5 progress reports on the Continuous Learning program will be emailed by the teacher on June 19 by 4:00pm.
6-11 grades must be posted no later than June 18 by 3:30pm with the last day for work submission being June 17th.
High school senior grades must be posted no later than June 15th by 3:30 with the last day for work submission being June 12th.
Grading
Grades or course marks shall be consistent with the OSPI Student Learning and Grading Guidance, with particular attention to those principles identified below:
Do no harm. Student grades will not be negatively impacted as a result of the March 17 building closures or of continuous learning through the end of the 2019–20 school year.
Districts will continue using grades as a means of communicating student progress and determining high school credit (RCW 28A.150.240). However, no student will receive a failing grade for any class during the COVID-19 closure period.
Districts are obligated to provide students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency in order to earn a passing grade. Districts can consider awarding an Incomplete (I) to students not on track for course completion or not yet proficient during the period of March 17 through the end of the 2019–20 school year. In such instances, a plan for course completion should be developed and followed.
All transcripts for a grading term, semester, quarter, or trimester that included closure days in the 2019–20 school year due to the COVID-19 emergency will have a COVID-19 designation.
We recognize that there inevitably will be learning gaps for all students, and that we will need to consider plans for learning this fall to accommodate those gaps.
K-5 Grading Procedures:
Teachers will provide a report at the end of the school year indicating their summative impression of the students' engagement and progress in the essential learnings for reading and math. The report shall be based on the professional judgement of the teacher using the holistic body of evidence gathered over this time period. This evidence includes completed written work, video submissions, formal and informal discussion, and participation. The intent of the report is to provide information on learning engagement and learning progress, as well as considerations for continued learning. A draft template of the summative report can be found here. Engagement in the optional learning activities for PE/Health, Music, and Science will not be included in this report. During the Continuous Learning Program activities will be monitored informally and feedback provided to students on an as needed basis.
6-12 Grading Procedures:
Teachers will grade based on an "A, B, C, D or Incomplete" grading system for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. These grades will be assigned using the following methodology:
Incompletes:
Students with a failing grade prior to March 17 who make little to no progress from April 27th to June 19th but engage;
Students choosing not to engage in the continuous learning program at all shall be assigned an Incomplete* grade for the semester no matter what their default March 17 grade was. (Students unable to engage in the learning program due to life circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis in partnership with school administrators and counselors.)
*Students who get an incomplete will have a variety of opportunities to retrieve the credit/show competence in the summer and/or fall.
Default March 17 Grade:
Students who do engage at some level in the continuous learning program from April 27th to June 19th -- will not receive a grade lower than the grade assigned when school closed on March 17.
Improved Grade:
Students excelling in the continuous learning program may improve upon their default March 17 semester grade if scores so warrant.
IEP/ELL Grading:
Students with an IEP have the option of a P or Passing grade when stated in the student's IEP. This is also possibly true for students with an ELL plan. (As an example, a student may have had an F showing as their Skyward grade prior to school closure; if they engage in work to the best of their abilities and circumstances, a P grade may be assigned, even if the F is still evident in Skyward.
Attendance
Attendance shall be reported by all teaching staff using the process determined by each school administrator. Staff shall report the names of students who are failing to participate or participating minimally in the learning program. This information will not lead to truancy proceedings per OSPI guidance, but will result in support provided by the administration to improve engagement. Teachers may use analytics from Clever and Schoology, work submission, and participation in classroom meetings/advisory to make the determination of who to report for additional support.
Attendance will not be a factor when determining student grades (RCW 28A.600.030).
