Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

**The class will be taking the Language Usage MAP test in Mrs. Crush's class this week!

Reading: This week we begin Unit 2: Animal Classification and I couldn't be more excited!  Students will become zoologists and make observations animals from live webcams from various zoos around the country. Later in the week, we will discuss vertebrates, invertebrates, and cold vs. warm blooded animals. We will introduce text features which is a major focus of this unit. We will also touch upon authors purpose as we read our new informational reader in class.

Foundational Skills: We will learn the spelling rule for adding the suffixes -ed and -ing to root words.  We will be learning the meaning of the 2 suffixes and also the doubling rule for spelling (explanation of the doubling rule is under the list of spelling words).

Homework: Spelling test in 2 weeks on Friday, October 4th!

**I plan to do this first round of spelling as it is directly from Amplify.  I will assess how it goes and decide if I think it is whats best for this class or not. Thanks for being patient with me as I learn this new curriculum as well!

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week in Math class, we are wrapping up Module One and preparing to take a chapter test. We will start the week by working on our last strategy for modeling multiplicaiton - bar models. We will use bar models throughout the school year as a way to visualize a problem, so this strategy will be an important one for our math tool belt. Students will use real world situations that involve multiplication and be able to create a bar model to match. Students will write their own word problems using MathPlayGround and use the thinking blocks to create a matching bar model.

They study guide is due Thirsday, so we can go over it together. If you child needs additional study materials, please let me know!
