What we are Learning This Week
Math: Mrs. Bennett
This week, our students will embark on an exciting exploration of our base 10 number system and the concept of place value. Here’s what to look forward to:
Comparing Number Systems: Students will compare our number system to buying items in bulk, similar to shopping at Costco. Students will use pasta noodles and add 10 noodles into a sandwich size bag. After they have ten of these, we will put them into a gallon sized bag to create a new "package." We will do this 10 times until we can create the next level "package" which will be worth 1,000 noodles. This will help them connect buying in bulk to our number system.
Creating New Systems: Each student will have the opportunity to create their own number system, experimenting within systems like base 5 and base 12, and discovering how these variations influence numerical representation. Afterwards, students will share how they feel about the way we group numbers after experiencing a different system.
Please encourage your children to share their discoveries with you!

LA: Mrs. Phelps
This past week we started learning about the characteristics of personal narratives. Not only are we learning about the structure of a paragraph but we are also reading examples of narratives together in class. All of this is to prepare students for writing their own personal narratives. This week we read a memoir and are discussing the cause and effect text structure. Students will learn that personal narratives are often structured around a change in character. (We have also been discussing character traits).
We will also be learning about how sensory details can enhance the readers experience and create more vivid mental images. We will identify examples of this in what we read and also use this skill to describe things from our own memories.
This week I will begin my individual reading assessments with each student. This will tell me who is meeting benchmark for beginning of the year for 4th grade and identify specific areas of growth. I will use this data to create groups and begin progress monitoring.
No homework this week!
**Expect this to change weekly. Eventually, students will be set up on a couple of Amplify apps that may be utilized for homework.
Social Studies: Mrs. Crush
This week, we will continue our exploration of civics standards. Our students have been actively engaged in learning about:
Diverse Forms of Self-Government: They are comparing the political form of monarchy with the self-governing systems developed in colonial America.
Civic Participation: Students are understanding the importance of civic participation through local examples from past and current events.
Processes for Change: They are describing the processes people use to change rules and laws and how these developments improve communities to meet the needs of citizens.
I'm excited to see our students’ enthusiasm and commitment to learning about their roles as responsible citizens!
Religion: Mrs. Crush
This week in Religion, we will continue Chapter 1, God's Loving Plan, in our Word of Life workbooks. Through these lessons, students will discover that those who seek God will find Him. They will learn about their calling to be in communion with God, understand the concept of truth, and review God's plan of salvation. Most importantly, they will see that true happiness and truth can only be found in God.
Important Announcements:
Chapter 1 Test: Please note that the test for Chapter 1, God's Living Plan, will take place on Friday, August 30th.
1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections: Each student is asked to complete two service hours per trimester. Their 1st Trimester Service Hours and Reflections are due Wednesday, October 30. This will be complete on Google Classroom.
