Language Arts- Mrs. Phelps

We will begin this week with a reading comprehension assessment to end unit 2. This does not require studying. I will be breaking this assessment up into parts and any grammar (parts of speech) or morphology concepts are not assessing mastery and are included in the next unit as well. We will not get far into the unit this week, however, you can find the skills we will touch upon below:

Reading:

Students will read and answer comprehension questions about the body’s skeletal system, including axial bones.

Writing:

Students will identify topic and concluding sentences.

Language:

Students will write words using spelling patterns and rules for

regular and irregular plural nouns.

Homework:  Reading Fluency Passage

**You will receive an Amplify Take Home sheet with spelling words for a test on Friday, December 6th. Please keep this list somewhere so it won't be lost over the break!

Unit 3 Caregiver Letter

The Human Body: Systems and Senses is our next unit and I am very excited! It looks to be challenging but so very interesting. In second grade, the class had a unit titled The Human Body: Building Blocks and Nutrition. Prior knowledge plays an essential role in reading comprehension. Not only does it help when making inferences, for example, but also with understanding more content specific vocabulary.

Math-Mrs. Bennett

This week students are continuing to work on the Module Multiplying by a 1-digit number. We will focus on solving larger multiplication problems using open area models. Students will decompose their factors and calculate the area for each part, and finally add the partial products together! This is the building block from solving concretely (base-10 blocks, place value disks) to pictorial representations. Towards the end of the week, I may even challenge some students to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication equations using area model!

Homework:

11/19 - SS #34

11/20 - SS #35

11/21 - SS #36

11/22 - SS Quiz

Social Studies- Mrs. Crush

This week, the students will continue to understand the purpose of rules and laws in guiding behavior and maintaining order in a community. They will also explore the role of the Judicial Branch in the United States government, specifically the Supreme Court's role in interpreting laws. We will be reading the books, Obeying Laws by Vincent Alexander and What is the Judicial Branch? by Ellen Rodger, to go enhance these lessons. Students will create a small booklet titled "Laws in Action." They will draw or write about three examples of laws they follow (e.g., traffic rules, recycling, school rules) and explain why each law is important. This booklet will be graded on completeness, creativity, and understanding of why laws exist. The students will have class time to complete this project and will be given a copy of the directions and rubrics.

Religion- Mrs. Crush

This week in Religion, we will complete Chapter 5: God's Promise of a Savior. The students will:

Words to Know: concupiscence, infinite, original holiness, original justice, and Original Sin

***Students have been also creating images of Our Lady of Guadalupe to be entered into "Saints for Kids" section of Youth Focus in The Record Newspaper. Please see link above, "Our Lady of Guadalupe Illustrations," of the beautiful images they have created.
