Overview: In the third grade, students use two devices: iPads and HP convertible laptops. This is the year they begin to learn keyboarding through a program called Learning.com. Along with keyboarding, students are taught how to correctly operate both devices and use each as a tool to both enhance their learning and as a means to support their education. Each student is issued a Google for Education account under ASB's domain. They will work with Google Classroom, where teachers can assign and collect assignments, post announcements and ask questions online. Additionally, students have an affiliated gmail account to use for school-related communication.

During the course of the year, third graders use various google tools for word processing and creating presentations. They are also taught basic coding with Scratch, and they learn how to conduct themselves with integrity and respect on-line through lessons by Common Sense Media and Learning.com platform.

Third graders have much greater technological responsibilities this year than they have ever had in the past, and so we dedicate class time to talk about mistakes that are made, how we learn from them, grow, and move on.

Finally, during the course of the year, third graders will learn the importance of the STEM process which teaches highly transferable skills. In our STEM Labs, they will go though the process of questioning, planning, designing, testing, revising, and reflecting.

The Week of 9/17/18
This is the first week where students are introduced to STEM Lab. In this week's introductory lesson, students will work at this learning target: You will understand what STEM stands for as you generate and compare multiple solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. This covers the Next Generation Science Standards: (3-5) ETS1-2 Engineering Design A big part of STEM learning is collaboration with others. We'll be starting off small on teams of 2-3 and changing of the configurations throughout the year.
In this activity, I wanted to bring to mind what is currently happening with hurricane Florence. Students are constructing a small house with limited supplies that can withstand flooding (think stilts) and strong wind (a fan). A few will begin construction this week, and most will finish next week. I'm looking forward to seeing whose house will survive Hurricane Prewitt!
