The Number Box programme is designed to teach and support early number and maths skills for any children who are working at 'concrete' level. Ideally it should be used for a few minutes a day to ensure that the children have a solid foundation of number concepts and mental skills are able to become 'automatic' ie the beginnings of 'abstract' understanding.

The record of work booklets should be filled in by the adult, giving brief notes about work covered and any target areas or areas of difficulty.
It is recommended to use the Highland Diagnostic Assessments to establish what the pupil can do and to identify targets.
Following that, use the 5-minute number box to work on identified targets.
The teacher can use the Assessment Progression to highlight what is being worked on, set targets and record achievements.
