At Meiklemill School, we recognise that within the Curriculum for Excellence lies the entitlement to learning about Scotland’s cultures, people, history and achievements. We use our nation’s heritage, not only at the key points of November and January, but throughout the year as a context for learning and working together, as well as a basis for our school’s identity. We proudly sing traditional songs and dance, too!
Reflecting our heritage is our school mascot, Muckle Moo the Heilan Coo. Designed by a pupil in 2017, Muckle Moo’s proudly wears his kilt, made from our unique tartan. This tartan was created in celebration of school’s 40th anniversary and features setts of red, green and blue to represent our three houses against navy background for the colour in our uniform, and yellow to show that we are a happy school.
Muckle Moo appears around school on notices, as well as on certificates and badges. You’ll also spot him on staff sweatshirts!
With Scots being officially recognised as a language in its own right and with 1.5 million people speaking a version of Scots, we recognise this by using Doric in our school, our region’s dialect, especially during January. Doric also appears in our new school motto…
