Badge Challenges are unique to Meiklemill school. Inspired by the Glasgow Commonwealth Games of 2014, our badge challenges have evolved, adapted and developed but at the root of each challenge lie practice or perseverance.
Indeed, one of our core values is ‘Growth Through Challenge’ and aiming towards the achievement of a badge is one of the many examples of how this value forms part of the very thread of our school.
Our children choose from a range of badges available which challenge them with either physical skills, in teamwork or link to current work in class or across school. These can be individual challenges or done with others. Often our older children will guide and support younger children to achieve badges, especially in the playground.
Badges earned are collected by our pupils on their lanyard which will match their house colour. It’s always exciting for our children to pin their latest achievement on their lanyard.
We aim to provide a balance of challenges to include something which will appeal to every pupil. Many are differentiated by stage or where a child finds themselves in their overall learning journey.
Pupils can also devise their own challenges and are encouraged to consider how to ensure that their challenge is achievable with the two Ps at the forefront; practice and perseverance. They can lead these challenges and encourage schoolmates to have a go.
We also devise ‘At Home’ challenges which allow family members to be involved. These can involve such things as working together in the kitchen, scavenger hunts in the local area or challenges linked to particular curricular areas, making direct links with our learning in school and the world at home.
