Adverse Weather Arrangements for 2025-26
If used on a road or public place, they’re legally treated like cars.
Do you have a licence?
Is it registered to you?
Is it insured to you?
If not, it’s illegal – police have powers to seize the bike (any age of rider) and charge the rider (aged 12+) with crimes.
If seized, the bike will be recovered to a garage and will not be released until proof of ownership and appropriate documentation is presented, and storage costs paid.
Exemption: if ridden on private land with landowners' permission, or rented (in designated trial areas – driving licence required).
*** No exemptions for speed or power ***
Young people can receive penalty points on a ‘ghost licence’, which are added to any provisional driving licence they might later apply for.
Parents could face a fine and points on their licence if their children ride them illegally – £300 + 6 penalty points out of court (Fixed Penalty), or 6 to 8 penalty points + unlimited fine at court.
It’s parents/carers responsibility to know this – a simple search online gives the same info.

Parents and carers are key influencers over young people’s career ambitions and choices.
SDS work in close partnership with this school to support our young people to make informed career choices and they would value feedback from parents and carers on their services. You can do this by taking part in SDS’s Parent and Carer Voice survey.
All responses are confidential and anonymous, and the results will be used to inform SDS services, and the survey should only take about 10 minutes to complete. All entrants have the chance to win a £100 Amazon voucher.

Drugs education charity, the DSM Foundation is delighted to be working with your child’s school with funding from Police Scotland to deliver drug awareness workshops for parents.
Please see the details below plus the link to register. It will provide parents and caregivers with information about the risks faced by young people when it comes to drugs and alcohol and the factors that affect the decisions they make, at a broad level, but also when navigating staying safe at summer parties, gatherings and festivals. Attendees will be provided with the tools they need to have effective conversations with their child about drugs and alcohol, and practical suggestions for ways to support them to stay safe, and will be able to access related written information after the session.

The DSM Foundation is a drugs and alcohol education charity set up in 2014 by Fiona and Tim Spargo-Mabbs after the tragic death of their 16 year old son Daniel as a result of an accidental overdose of ecstasy. The aim of the charity is to support young people to make informed and safer choices about drugs, which it does through a broad range of workstreams.
