Our school librarian is Miss Bruce and she is happy to help with any queries. Contact at gw20brucemaxine@glow.scot.uk
Our pupils visit the library to borrow books, to find information, to use ICT, to study, or to enjoy a calm, safe space to relax with friends at breaktimes (phone-free!). Miss Bruce delivers Library Lessons with S1-3 around Information Literacy and Reading for Pleasure. During these periods pupils also check out books and resources and they keep a Reading Journal where Miss Bruce replies to their entries to track their reading progress over the school year. Our Senior Phase pupils have lessons in the library for help with research, referencing and searching secondary sources when working towards essays, portfolios and dissertations.
We also host many extracurricular activities, reading groups, author visits, book fairs, and special book celebrations and challenges throughout the school year.

Our Reading Schools Accreditation journey with Scottish Book Trust has taken place over the two last years, but we have been committed to embedding a powerful reading culture for pupils and staff at Mackie Academy and beyond for a long time now.
Research proves that reading for pleasure supports equity and wellbeing, impacts learners' attainment, and encourages critical thinking, creativity, empathy and resilience. At Mackie staff are great at championing all types of reading - physical books, eBooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, magazines, comics, classics, and everything in between!
Focusing on our Reading Schools award has allowed us to further engage families, improve literacy, develop empathy and curiosity, increase reading engagement to close the attainment gap, develop memory capacity, encourage pupils to experience other cultures and perspectives, and improve vocabulary, social and communication skills.
We gained our Silver award in July 2024 and are looking forward to going for Gold. It has been wonderful to celebrate this achievement together as a school community and continue to sustain our brilliant reading culture at Mackie!
