Home Learning

How do you get the most out of learning from home?

You may find yourself learning from home for a number of reasons:

  • Home Learning - Scottish Government guidance mean schools are closed (unless you are vulnerable and/or child of a keyworker)

  • Blended Learning - some students are in school and some are learning from home

  • Self-isolation - you have symptoms of COVID19 and/or a family member/close contact has tested positive for COVID19

Top Tips for Home Learning

  1. Look at your school timetable and make sure you've joined or been added to the Google Classroom for each subject on your timetable, including PSE and also your Year Group (or Microsoft Team for TVE and some subjects delivered by some partner schools/North East Scotland College).

  2. Establish a daily routine - it is up to you whether you try to follow your normal timetable or if you prefer to create your own. Please bear in mind, any live lessons/tutorials will be offered at timetabled class time and advertised on your class team.

  3. Make sure you eat and drink regularly.

  4. Set limits on your screen time/take regular breaks from computer work.

  5. Ask teachers for help if there is anything you are unsure of and use the "To-Do"/calendar option on Google Classroom to help prioritise tasks.

  6. Ensure you do some daily exercise.

  7. Only look at social media at certain times of day.

  8. Try to get up and go to bed at the same times each day.

  9. Check your Glowmail.

  10. Respond to the daily check-in on your year-group Google Classroom.

Some essentials to know about Google Classroom

Tip 1: What Google apps are available?

If you are going to be accessing work from an iPad/phone etc, it would be worth downloading some of the other Google apps. They are all free to download. If you are using a laptop then everything opens on a new webpage. If you have a laptop/PC then you can skip to Tip 2!

Google Forms/Chrome

If your teacher has set a Google Form or you are opening a Google Form Quiz then it will open better if you have Google Chrome as an app. A regular issue is when you choose Safari on an iPhone etc, the Safari page does not have your Glow account built in and the item appears to be restricted access because you “swapped accounts” by opening Safari.

Google Docs

If your teacher has loaded anything in Word/Google Docs like a worksheet and they want you to write on it electronically then having Google Docs will help with this. Many worksheets can be opened up, you then click on the pencil/crayon button and you can write into the correct answer box or you can put a textbox there and type an answer if you prefer.

Google Slides

If your teacher has loaded a PowerPoint for you to see or a Google Slide presentation, then you can normally view this without needing any further apps but if your teacher is asking you to add things to the PowerPoint or write your own answers in then it might be sensible to have the Google Slides app. If the teacher has put sound onto some slides, then this is going to work better in Slides if that’s what the teacher has produced the work using.

Google Drive

If you want to be able to access any of the documents that you started to work on but perhaps paused or it might be an ongoing project piece for a teacher then the Google Drive app might be useful. This gives you access to any of the items that teachers have assigned to you, any items you are working on that have been automatically saved and any items that you handed in/were returned to you to review the marking/ feedback. You can view these through Classroom itself in the relevant classwork assignments but here it will be grouped together. This automatically arranges work by your subjects/Google Classroom groups and within those folders by different classwork titles/dates. If you did the work and handed it in but the teacher says you forgot to attach the work etc you will find it here probably!

Tip 2: What work do I owe?

If you want to see which items of work are owed then you can go to your Google Classroom homepage and on the left hand side you should find “To Do” and there will be a list ACROSS ALL YOUR SUBJECTS of the homework/classwork that is owed. As you look across the homepage, any class with work due will have it appear under the class header with a due date etc. When you click in a classroom then on the left there is an “Upcoming” box where assignments are listed.

Tip 3: How do I keep on top of my work?

If you have completed the work (even if it was to be done on paper or did not require work to be handed in) then on the to-do list make sure that you have clicked it as complete/handed in. This will mean it disappears from the list and you can focus on what needs to be finished off.

Tip 4: How can I work out what to prioritise?

Next to the “To-Do” there is a Calendar option. If you open this calendar, then your deadlines for the various pieces of work will appear on the calendar for the week so you can see what is due first and that might help you to prioritise.

Tip 5: What do I do if I’m not in all the right classrooms?

If you have a Google Classroom missing, then first of all you should click on the 3 lines in the top left and check your “Archived Classes” as you might have accidentally archived/deleted a class. If it’s not there, then you should contact the teacher and ask for the JOINING CODE which will be at the top of their classroom OR you can ask them to add you directly by adding you to “People” in the class. When they have invited you, you can either click on the email that you receive to your Glow account OR when you are on your Google Classroom homepage it should appear as a new Google Classroom box with the option under it to “agree” the invite.

From Monday, CBBC will offer three hours of primary school programming from 9am, while BBC Two will provide at least two hours of dedicated programming for pupils studying for their GCSEs each weekday. Director-general Tim Davie said: “Ensuring children across the UK have the opportunity to continue to follow the appropriate core parts of their nation’s school curriculum has been a key priority for the BBC throughout this past year. Education is absolutely vital – the BBC is here to play its part and I’m delighted that we have been able to bring this to audiences so swiftly.”
