Applications of Mathematics

The Applications of Mathematics course enables learners to apply mathematical ideas and strategies.

The Applications of Mathematics course offers the same value as the (traditional) Mathematics qualifications, but there are differences in content – see below for some details:

Mathematics

  • Algebraic thinking & manipulation

  • Equations & formulae

  • Geometrical theory & applications

  • Trigonometry

Applications of Mathematics

  • Financial Mathematics

  • Statistics

  • Measurement

  • Numeracy and problem-solving

The Applications of Mathematics qualification is recognised by colleges, universities and employers as being a valid Mathematical qualification and it can be accepted as entry qualifications for a variety of courses/apprenticeships.

However, there are certain fields of study/work where the Applications of Mathematics is not an acceptable entry – for example, some STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) courses.

Progression to Higher Mathematics from National 5 Applications of Mathematics is not possible due to the significant differences in content.

However, progression is available through the new Higher Applications of Mathematics qualification.
