P7/S1 Transition

During term 1 of S1, pupils will be in assigned registration classes & in mixed ability sets for their Mathematics classes.

They will cover 2 topics: Fractions, and Expressions (algebra).

Additionally, they will cover common Numeracy skills at CfE Levels 2 and/or 3 through weekly homework tasks.

Prior to the end of term 1, S1 pupils will sit a diagnostic assessment on the above skills.

The faculty will reshuffle the sets to better use our resources to support those learners who need their confidence boosted and challenge those learners who need stretched.

All classes will cover the same topics with differentiated materials, but these set changes will support more appropriate pace and depth of learning.

Set moves will be based on several factors, including P7/S1 Transition information, S1 Diagnostic results & professional teacher judgement.

Frequently asked questions:

  • What is the difference in work covered by different sets?
In S1, the work covered by pupils in consecutive sets will be broadly similar, just at
a slightly different pace of learning.
Within each set, personalisation & differentiation will take place to meet individual
    learners’ needs.
Additional support and/or challenge will be provided where appropriate.

  • How does this affect their future learning?
The specific set a pupil is placed in does not affect their learning pathway.
The set a pupil is in will not affect their S4 NQ course/level, as it is their progress in learning throughout S1 to S3 which will be the dominant factor.
Further information about learning pathways into S4 can be found using this link.

  • Is there further opportunities to change set?
Further moves may happen throughout S1 & future years (normally after a period of
    formal assessment).
As above, we will consider several factors before making any set changes and notify parents in advance of any future moves.
