Curriculum Opportunities

Level 5 Young STEM Leaders

This is a course option in the S5 Elective Programme and  Level 5 Young STEM Leaders is a course offered by the Science Faculty. This award is a nationally recognised qualification that enables young people to support, engage and inspire others in STEM in their school, community or youth group. 

Students will have the opportunity to:

Plan, implement and review a STEM activity, identify current and future opportunities in STEM that are available to young people, deliver activities and events as a Young STEM Leader. Additionally students will be able to explore their own potential in STEM and have fun sharing knowledge and enthusiasm for STEM with others. As part of this Elective pupils can log their hours towards their next Saltire Award. 

Level 5-6 Leadership

This is an SQA award which can be undertaken by students in S4-S6. Students must complete two units aimed to enhance their understanding of how to be an effective leader and allow them to apply their skills and knowledge in a leadership role of their choice. To complete this award students will need to investigate leadership styles, effective leaders and evaluate their own capacity to be a leader. Additionally, students will plan, deliver and reflect on their practical delivery of sessions. As part of this award it is recommended students also log their hours towards their next Saltire Award.

Level 5-6 Volunteering

This is an SQA Award which can be undertaken by students in S4-S6. Students must complete three units aimed to enhance their understanding of how to be an effective volunteer, prepares them to volunteer and enables them to investigate local charities or initiatives which benefit from volunteers. 

As part of this award students can work with classmates in a variety of different volunteering settings of their choice. This award recognises your contribution to volunteering and the learning you gain as a result of being involved in activities. It is also recommended that when undertaking the leadership award that students also log their hours towards achieving their next Saltire Award.

S1-S3 Peer Support

This is a course option in the S5 Elective Programme and is an opportunity predominantly for S5/S6 students.
Peer Support allows students to utilise their free periods to support learning of S1-S3 classes alongside teaching staff.  Pupils can choose a subject, department or Enhanced Provision and this will allow them to demonstrate skills that they have developed in prior education. As part of this Elective pupils can log their hours towards achieving their next Saltire Award.

Community Volunteering & Leadership

This is a course option in the S5 Elective Programme and has ran as two separate courses.
Course 1: This is a course option in S5 Elective Programme through the PE Department aimed to support students become a volunteer in a variety of settings. Pupils will work with classmates in different volunteering opportunities with a focus on sport and physical activity. This has included Edenholme Care Home, Peer Support and Community Sports Clubs.
Course  2:  Community Leadership through Volunteering allows students the opportunity to peer support with a S1-3 class and engage in a paired reading experience with the pupils in Support for Learning  or learners from an S1 English class.
This Elective aims to develop confidence, build new relationships with people who we wouldn’t normally have met, and give our time to help others as part of a wider school community.

As part of either Elective it is recommended that pupils log their hours towards achieving their next Saltire Award. Young Enterprise 

This is a course option in the S5 Elective Programme and allows students to work together in a team to develop and manage their own company before creating and selling a unique product.

This will involve setting up your own student company, running the company through the key milestones of developing an idea, conducting market research, creating the product or service, promoting that product and ultimately trading it. If the company is successful then the team will be invited to take part in the Grampian Finals with the winners then going on to the Scottish finals.  Additionally as part of Young Enterprise students will have the opportunity to take part in the YES Company Programme qualification at SCQF Level 6.

S5 Powering Futures

This is a course option in the S5 Elective Programme and Powering Futures provides an opportunity to working in a team to create a solution to a real-world sustainability challenge set by real businesses and present this back to a panel of industry judges. By participating in this Elective, you will develop the critical meta-skills that employers are looking for, will gain an SCQF Level 6 Accredited qualification  and refine the skills which will help prepare you for your next steps beyond school.

NPA Level 5 Team Sport & Fitness

This is a course most suited to S4 students and is provided by the PE department aimed to provide an alternative pathway to National 5 PE. Level 5 Team Sport & Fitness aims to ensure pupils gain an early introduction to leadership and enables them to develop their practical skills, coaching repertoire and ability to lead small tournaments for S1-S2 and primary school pupils.

Students must complete three units to pass the course focus on participating in activity, developing their practical and coaching skills and applying these in a minimum of 4 progressive coaching sessions. As part of this course students should log their hours towards achieving their next Saltire Award.

NPA Level 6 Sports Development

This is a course option in S5-S6 through the PE Department aimed to develop knowledge and coaching skills, and the ability to lead games/ sessions for primary school children. This course requires students to complete a variety of outcomes including completing a minimum of 10 hours leading physical activity. As part of this Elective pupils can log their hours towards their next Saltire Award.

NPA Level 6 Exercise, Fitness & Leadership

This is a course option in S5-S6 through the PE Department aimed to develop a range of skills and knowledge of fitness alongside the ability to lead and deliver a fitness programme.
Pupils will have the opportunity to develop their coaching skills in 1-1 settings and also help deliver fitness sessions during class time, as part of the extra-curricular programme  to members of the public. As part of this Elective pupils can log their hours towards their next Saltire Award.
