At Arundel Christian School, we believe that developing academic responsibility in Grades 4 and 5 is foundational to student success. The outcomes listed below outline how students will actively engage in their learning and grow in the academic responsibility by the time they complete this phase of our program.
Participate in Learning: Contribute positively to class discussions, ask thoughtful questions, and work collaboratively in group activities.
Take Ownership of Learning: Use class time wisely, meet deadlines, and plan ahead for assignments and assessments.
Practice Academic Integrity: Complete and submit original work, avoid plagiarism and cheating, and uphold honesty in all academic tasks.
Reflect & Set Goals – Evaluate personal learning habits and set meaningful goals for academic growth.
As part of our college-preparatory program, 4th and 5th grade students are guided to become engaged learners in preparation for their next academic milestone: middle school. While these grades fall under our Upper School department, the instructional model reflects a traditional upper-elementary experience. Students follow the elementary bell schedule with 45-minute class periods.
Instruction is delivered in core subjects using the BJU Press curriculum. Additionally, ACS offers a personalized reading program designed to strengthen comprehension and foster a love for reading.

In Grades 4 and 5, the Academic Fair introduces students to the research process and foundational communication skills. While Science and Social Studies are taught year-round, students complete one integrated project per semester, alternating between subjects. Each project helps students practice collecting information, organizing findings, and presenting their ideas with clarity and creativity. Students are encouraged to engage hands-on with their topic and build confidence through visual display and verbal explanation.
Focus: Introduction to research and public speaking, guided project design, and clear content expression.
Exploring Gifts and Building Confidence
Students in Grades 4 and 5 are developing strong foundations in character, communication, and teamwork. These age-appropriate experiences allow them to try new things, grow in their faith, and learn the value of community and service in a safe and supportive environment.
Classroom Leadership Roles
Students are given opportunities to serve in rotating leadership roles within the classroom, such as line leader, tech helper, prayer leader, or clean-up captain.
Mini-Service Projects
Once a semester, students participate in age-appropriate service activities—such as making cards for seniors, cleaning up campus, or collecting food donations—introducing them to the heart of serving others.
Career Exploration Moments
Throughout the year, guest speakers or classroom-based “career spotlights” introduce students to interesting jobs and God’s creative design for work and purpose.
Teacher Mentorship
Students receive regular encouragement and personal development through positive reinforcement and character-building conversations with their teachers.
Family Worship Nights (Optional Participation)
Students and their families are invited to attend the school’s monthly worship night. This helps younger students experience community worship and see faith modeled in family life.
Spiritual Emphasis Events
Elementary students may participate in chapel services or special spiritual days designed to help them understand God’s love, the Bible, and how to grow in faith at their level.
