Overview
In an effort to expand its reach in the Morongo Basin, Arts Connection launched Sun Spot in fall 2022. The Sun Spot location was conceptualized and curated by Elena Yu to enliven social arts practice in the region in 2016. Now a Program Director with Arts Connection, Elena leads this unique outpost as an artist store and as a community resource hub in Yucca Valley. Sun Spot is open weekly, hosts events for all audiences, and supports the local artist market. The program provides mentoring for shopkeeping, public programming and product development. Artist vendors provide volunteer hours and lead innovative, community-engaged workshops. Launched in late 2022, this exciting new desert program has already served well over 300 in late 2022 just in a few short weeks.

The tiny wooden shack is crowned by a 6-foot-wide rising sun sculpture built by Bob Carr. When Bob Carr was alive, he would come sit under the covered porch, bringing his signature unceasingly sunny disposition to every interaction. We strive to continue fostering a space that brings sunny energy and joy to the community. The shack is already known as a spot where swap meet visitors stop under the covered porch, pull up a stool, and hang out to chat or make art for as long as they want. Some people stop by for one minute and others stay for hours!

Sun Spot is an artist store and a community resource hub located in Yucca Valley. Built by local artists, Sun Spot is a place for everyone and can be owned by anyone. Artist and community practitioners engage is social art practices to foster communtity, and teach workshops. The goal of the program is build artist careers, giving them an opportunity to build entrepreneur skills, build community a community space, and lead the creative economy in California.

Sun Spot artists are invited to propose programming to be presented during open hours. Projects that promote skill sharing, dialogue, and other forms of inclusionary exchange and community building with swap meet visitors will be prioritized. Regional Program Director Elena Yu will work with artists to develop ways their practices might be adapted to fit these parameters.
