AFTERSCHOOL ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE (AIR)
Launched in February 2022, the After School AIR Program provides free creative opportunities to students by offering visual arts and performing arts classes at local schools. Arts Connection works with the San Bernardino City Unified School District's after school program, also known as CAPS, to provide these classes.
The program provides jobs to local teaching artists, who receive mentoring and training. Newly trained teachers then teach students writing, ceramics, drawing, dance, mixed media, music composition, photography, eco-art, and more. This program introduces youth to creative career experiences and pathways, builds creative confidence, and offers opportunities to destress and reduce anxiety.
AIR supports community-level arts-focused spaces for youth to convene and express themselves – a place to experience feelings of safety, belonging, and pride. Classes culminate with an art exhibition held at the end of the school year at local art galleries. In 2022, the AIR program served 527 students and produced 383 classes.
