The lecture series of the Center for Art Convergence present various interdisciplinary discourses and criticisms that can often be seen in our society.
The 2018 lecture program “Connected Society” aims to create a space of multi-faceted discourses by dealing with the topic of “connection” from various perspectives and fields in modern society, where each subject is closely connected with each other for various reasons and methods. Scrutinizing the potential of “connection” that surrounds us through the academy, technology, society, art, and game fields, we tried to explore the convergence value that connects and crosses.
In the first lecture, we will look at Mixrice’s works to examine the practice method of artists who connect others and the world through art. The second lecture investigated the significance of “Seongbuk Art Commons,” a virtual village established to connect artists with a specific region.
If the first and second lectures were about practice in the field of art, the subsequent lectures focus on how we are connected through the influence of technology. The third lecture was on the background of opening the course “Machine Criticism” at Hanyang University Erica Campus, focusing on the context in which the humanities, technology, and art are connected and how it was solved through education.
The fourth lecture dealt with the chronology of communication technology developed for long-distance communication, focusing on the United States and Korea. Also, its discussion was expanded beyond the physical connection to a virtual connection. In the last lecture, we looked at the connections and experiments between players that take place through the interactive genre of games, reviewing the experimental game festival “Out of Index.”

“Out of Index”: Interconnection among games, art, and players – Sun Park (Indie Game Developer)
Games are attracting attention as an expression medium with the potential for artistic expression and cultural practice. In this lecture, various possibilities of games were explored through the story of developer Sun Park, who creates communities connected through games such as “Out of Index,” “Seoul Indies,” and “Global Game Jam.” In the game industry where it is easy to focus only on popularity and profits, participants had an opportunity to think about the significance of media expression by examining the background of planning to express fresh inspiration, ideas, and experimental spirit with “experimental games” as well as the discourses on diversity.https://www.outofindex.org
