We will take a look at “Seongbuk Art Commons,” a regional art project that is taking place in Seongbuk-gu, where Korea National University of Arts is located. Opened to revitalize local culture based on visual arts, “Seongbuk Art Commons” is based on an imaginary town, “Seongbuk Art Dong” – a town that does not exist in administrative districts – where artists, art space operators, planners, and art lovers live together based on art galleries, cultural hub spaces, and artist studios. It is a project that has been carried out since 2014.Together with the exhibitions, various programs such as workshops, forums, resident participation projects, and art markets are held for about a month from May to June, with different themes every year. The first “Seongbuk Art Commons” in 2015 introduced the art ecosystem of Seongbuk-gu by planning various exhibitions, events, and gatherings under the themes of “spring,” “strolling,” and “encounter.” The second “Seongbuk Art Commons,” held in 2016, under the theme of “neighboring,” was intended to provide a place where Seongbuk Art Dong residents, local residents, and other artists from various regions could become neighbors without hesitation. In 2017, under the theme of “Swaying Art Island,” it was intended to connect the art spaces scattered like an archipelago in Seongbuk-dong to provide an art platform to visualize the Seongbuk art scene. This year, by expanding the studios of local artists into a regional network, a visiting program and collaborative residency program were promoted under the theme of “public residency.”“Seongbuk Art Commons,” repeated four times with different annual themes, has played a role in connecting and expanding the network between locals and artists, artists and artists, artists and residents, based on an art-based network. This lecture looked at the efforts of “Seongbuk Art Commons” for connection and its concerns about methods for the continuous coexistence of locals, residents, and artists beyond simple connection.
