Sun Park (Indie Game Developer)
Games are attracting attention as an expression medium with the potential for artistic expression and cultural practice. In this lecture, various possibilities of games were explored through the story of developer Sun Park, who creates communities connected through games such as “Out of Index,” “Seoul Indies,” and “Global Game Jam.”The experimental game festival “Out of Index (hereinafter referred to as OOI),” which is in its fifth year this year, focuses on the “creators” unlike other game festivals. The planning group aims to encourage “more and more people to make their own works (games), so that those people can discover each other, and that they can be found and supported by the public.” In particular, they expect that fresh games influenced by various experiments will come to the market through the connection between “laboratory” and “market.”What makes “OOI” different from other game festivals is that the existence of the “Experimental Game Festival” itself becomes a message, and each selected game also becomes a message. In order to deliver such a message, it is important to create a well-connected prime number above all else. Therefore, “OOI” tries to create a process in which the audiences ask questions to themselves and find answers proactively.Recalling the issues of the past and present of “OOI,” we looked at the experimental spirit pursued by the planning team and their efforts, and we also looked at examples of games presented at the festivals. In addition, the concept of “Playful Media” was recognized on the verge of boundaries and expansion among the keywords of “game,” “experiment,” and “art.” In this way, in the game industry where it is easy to focus only on popularity and profits, participants had an opportunity to think about the significance of media expression by examining the background of planning to express fresh inspiration, ideas, and experimental spirit with “experimental games” as well as the discourses on diversity.
