“Let’s collide a little.”
The Center for Art Convergence planned a <Collider Project> where students from 6 schools could meet, experiment, and collaborate through workshops and lectures on an annual theme. In the first year, 2016, the theme of “mechanism” was dealt with the mixed use of analog and digital technologies. Based on these contents, in August 2016, workshops and lectures conducted by two artist groups were prepared. The participating students aimed to broaden their understanding of the mechanism through workshops and lectures and to create prototype objects with various imaginations.

Dispelling the myth of the machine | Youngjun LeeWe are surrounded by machines and live our lives taking machines for granted. There are many dangerous and intimidating machines. But again, we worry that artificial intelligence might dominate humans. The fear of machines is that they can kill people, but they are also becoming mythical, and we cannot escape from them. It is impossible to live in an apartment on the 23rd floor without an elevator. In this lecture, the myth of machines was debunked by examining how dependent we have become on machines and what structural and functional characteristics of those machines brought them into our lives.
Unconventional Drawing: from Atom to Bit | Unmake LabIf drawing can be defined as a trace of the thought process, drawing can be thought of as a starting point for all activities that involve tactile exploration. During this workshop, we expanded this meaning of drawing a little further and set it as a concept that bridges two worlds: an atom (material) and a bit (0 and 1). We tried to connect the mechanism of movement understood through hacking of objects, and the mechanism of digital understood via digital signal generators and tried an unconventional drawing. Through this process, participants created their own drawing mechanism by linking the body and surrounding energy, objects, and electronic circuits.
Creatures with Unfamiliar Movements | ProtoroomWe may think conventionally, communicate, and express the products of digital abstraction layered on top of each other because of its familiarity and convenience. In order to look back on the process, we tried sensing and expressing from the lowest 0s and 1s that constitute the digital medium. We constructed a cell of a primitive circuit that beats with a bit and created a mechanical creature with an unfamiliar movement. It will give orders in new vocabulary to mechanical creatures, and it will be differentiated into various atypical movements. Living things will fill our environment and leave a drawing of countless traces.
