Children NEED to stay safe. The Internet is filled with valuable information, people from all over the world, strangers looking to vent their anger or abuse others, and lots of useless videos and comments.

What can you do to protect your child?
Children use the Internet in these ways:
Passive consumption: watching TV, reading, and listening to music
Interactive consumption: playing games and browsing the Internet
Communication: video-chatting and using social media
Content creation: using devices to make digital art or music
All have their value, but children should limit their entertainment and game playing.
1. Limit time
2. Block websites
3. Block content
Always enable parental controls to limit how long children use screens and block specific websites like YouTube or other non-kid-friendly sites.
Internet or No Internet?
Children can get devices, but you can limit their wireless access.
You can load music or apps on yourself then turn off the WiFi when they use it.

Should children under 13 use email?
Maybe... depends.
Federal law restricts it, but in my experience ~50% of students age 12 have email.
The main reason why it's not allowed is children must be protected.
Children should never give out personal information like age, last name, family members, location, and school.
And never talk to strangers!
Children with email accounts should:
1. Only respond to email addresses they recognize
2. Delete messages from strangers
3. Not sign up for emails
4. Get parent permission for creating an account on another website
5. Learn the basics of email like how to properly send emails and mark emails as spam
