This is the digital home of the Fort River Elementary School art classes. Look for the button or the drop-down menu with your grade level for this week's lesson. You may have landed here via ClassDojo, Seesaw, or Google Classroom, but no matter the route, you're in the right place! Welcome!
In each grade level's page, you will also find past projects. For many of these, you will find a link to a Google Doc, Google Slideshow, Youtube video, and/or other resources. Please read any notes I write about each link. In the "Info" section of this website, I've included some art tips for adults, how to contact me, and how to share your artwork with the Fort River Community. We are looking forward to seeing what you create!
Students at Fort River explore drawing, coloring, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed-media sculpture, ceramics, beading, fiber arts including sewing, weaving, felting, and batik, as well as collaborative and performance arts such as installations, murals, puppetry, and musical instrument making. While this year's art curricula may be somewhat limited due to remote learning and safety protocols, Ms. Singer plans to continue to provide a varied and exciting curriculum for her students throughout the year even at a distance.
Nicole Singer teaches visual art for Kindergarten through sixth grade at Fort River Elementary School in Amherst, MA. She teaches all visual art media, with a particular specialty in ceramics and 3D sculpture. Her teaching emphasizes multicultural and anti-racist pedagogies, and interdisciplinary curricula.
Ms. Singer grew up in New York City. By fifth grade, she knew she wanted to be a teacher, and midway through high school, she figured out that she wanted to teach art! In pursuit of this dream, she attended Swarthmore College and earned a BA in Studio Art with a specific concentration in Ceramics and a minor in Education, both with honors. After taking a year off to work as an outdoor educator and deckhand aboard a schooner, she attended graduate school for her MAT in Art Education through Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts-Boston. She has also taught middle and high school students, and was for many years the head of the ceramics studio and an administrator at Buck’s Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp in New Milford, Connecticut. She also taught archery there.
When she's not teaching art, she enjoys dancing, gardening, and of course, working on her own art! She works primarily in clay and glass. She is also a semi-professional singer of traditional folk songs and organizer of folk music events around New England. Her music can be found at www.nicolesinger.com
