Quarter 1 Library Newsletter!
Dear Dallin Families,
Welcome to the latest edition of The Library Dispatch, the Dallin School Library Quarterly Newsletter! We know your time is precious, so we'll be completely honest: this newsletter is packed with information and runs a tiny bit long. However, we promise the extra scroll is worth it! Inside, you’ll find a wider scope of what students have been learning in quarter 1 along with important library program information and reminders (please help children return books). Think of it as a behind-the-scenes peek into your child's learning journey. Happy reading!
Best wishes,
Mrs. Maldonado (Mrs. M)
The Dallin Book Fair was a huge success! Students spent time browsing the book fair talking about their reading interests. Special thanks to the Dallin PTO and Fantastic Book Fairs for an amazing book fair experience. Funds raised from the Dallin Book Fair help to fund Dallin programs, events, and PTO grants.
Our K and 1st graders learned about four sections of the library they are most likely to browse for books. The Everyone Books & Special Picture Book Collections contain all of picture books. The Special collection area contains easy to browse book bins by topic (spooky, princess, adventure, funny) while the Everyone section organizes our picture books by author last name. They also learned about our short chapter books and non-fiction sections.
Grades 2-5 spent multiple visits doing library scavenger hunts. These were hard and really challenged them to think about the importance of being proficient users of the library and not just their favorite sections. We have since focused on learning:
The different sections of the library and calling them by their proper names. We have banned the phrase “over there” when telling peers where books are located.
We tested their knowledge on reading call numbers—the essential address label for every book! We started small - understanding the difference between “FIC”, “E”, “Graphics”.
Our First Graders wasted no time and began checking out books on their very first library visits! We've focused on reinforcing key habits of being great library patrons:
Book Care: Gentle handling and safe storage of our library books.
Returning Books: Bringing books back on time so others can enjoy them.
Respecting the Collection: Alerting staff to damaged books and placing unwanted items on the library carts (not back on the shelf!).
Second through Fifth Grades also began book checkouts right away, revisiting and mastering our library norms and routines. We appreciate the leadership they show in maintaining our shared space!
The library was a hub of cultural learning during Hispanic Heritage Month! Students in the upper grades spent several weeks exploring the contributions of influential Hispanic figures. We learned about the perseverance and legacy of figures like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.
Our youngest students, the Kindergarteners, have had monumental first months in the library! They've successfully completed their library training, learning the essentials of book care, how to browse our collection, and the all-important skill of checking books out.
A huge milestone was reached when they became the first Dallin students to receive their very own Dallin Library Cards!
To lighten the serious nature of library training, Ms. M shared her love of vintage entertainment and introduced students to the Sesame Street Yip Yaps—the famously bewildered Martians. The mix of silent, intrigued concentration quickly gave way to a roaring wave of laughter! It was a perfect, memorable moment demonstrating that the library is a place for both quiet exploration and joyful discovery.

A Big Step for Our Readers: Library Cards Are Here!
We have some exciting news for all K-5 students: Official Dallin School Library Cards have arrived!
The announcement was met with such an amazing roar of applause and excitement—it turns out getting your own library card is a huge deal!
What's so special about these cards?
They are exclusive and only work at our very own Dallin Library.
They help us prepare for our future self-checkout system!
This will give students more independence and a chance to take ownership of their book selection process.
Library cards will stay at the Dallin School Library. Students know that if they accidentally take it back to class or home, they should make sure to return it to the library.
Welcome to the Dallin School Library!
This year, we're thrilled to introduce two new staff members to our team! Please join us in welcoming Dallin Library Teacher Melissa Maldonado (Ms. M) and Library Paraprofessional Danielle Jensen (Mrs. Jensen).
Both Ms. M and Mrs. Jensen are excited to join the wonderful Dallin Community and look forward to meeting all of you.
We're heading into the new school year with a positive outlook and an adventurous spirit, because, after all, The Universe Awaits at the Dallin School Library!
