Gain the practical experience that employers want.
Preceptorships give you the practical skills and the edge desired by employers for those considering education/training related positions. These semester-long courses complement classroom learning, giving you a well-rounded education that combines theory with practical application.
We recommend this if your Future Goals include any of the following:
Instruction or Instructional Design
Training/Mentoring
Learning or Workshop Facilitation
Copyediting (this can be a lucrative field!)
AI enhancement + usage (we can provide practice in integration and prompt engineering in service to improving our learning experiences)
Caveat: If this is only one of your possible goals, an Independent Study may be more appropriate as it can INCLUDE these goals, but not be limited to them.
Core Requirements
Approval from Faculty & Your Advisor
Course is completed with a full-time faculty member as Mentor/Supervisor.
Live Synchronized Sessions (Set individually with the supervising professor.)
45 hours of work per unit of credit, per semester. (1-3 unit options are available.)
All required elements are submitted via D2L
As a preceptor, you assist the professor in ways you and the professor decide on together, i.e. by helping design certain lessons, holding office hours or review sessions, or leading discussions. The primary role of an undergraduate preceptor is to facilitate learning and help students meet their course and personal objectives. Typically, we want students to focus on mentoring students through their leadership development and understanding of concepts. We can design exactly what activities you use for your hours based on your final goals. These experiences are generally considered unique leadership experiences and reflect well on resumes and transcripts.
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course those who fully participate will be able to:
Demonstrate enhanced understanding of methodologies, pedagogical techniques, and classroom management strategies.
Offer guidance and mentorship to students, helping them navigate academic challenges and develop their leadership skills.
Organize and conduct office hours or review sessions to address individual or group concerns, clarify concepts, or offer additional support.
Reflect on preceptor experiences, identifying areas for improvement and professional growth.
Facilitate learning through interactive discussions, encouraging active student participation and critical thinking.
Unique Options
Preceptor in Mentoring: Under the direction of a mentoring expert, you receive direct coaching in how to be an effective mentor. You'll be paired with a mentee and will practice under your mentoring expert's direction throughout the semester - allowing you to develop yourself in this rarely actively practiced leadership skill and help someone else succeed all at once. In addition, you could work more on your personal developmental network and receive individual support in doing that.
Preceptor / Teaching Assistant: You serve as a special undergraduate version of a teaching assistant in any LDRV course you have previously completed OR are taking concurrently - giving you a chance to practice group and team management and develop a deeper relationship with our faculty while doing a deeper dive on that course's topic.
