Project Option:
Marketing Yourself + Going on the Job Market
This project option is beneficial to students who need time for:
Exploring their career interests
Polishing their CV or Resume
Refining their job search skills
Preparing to go on the job market!
The project has 5 parts (these are perfect for spending around 1 week on for each part, I believe they take from 2-5 hours each) on how to market yourself and find your Dream Job as well.
You are not in any way required to do this series, but it's here if the idea appeals to you and you would like to integrate it into your proposal for either an internship or independent study.
Marketing You, Pt. 1: Steps 1-3 set you on the path to finding your Dream Job by motivating you to discover what, specifically, you are marketing yourself for.
You will investigate:
Your Invisible Scripts - and how they influence your approach to job searching and career development
Job titles - and which ones sustain your interest after a deep dive into the details
You will develop:
The foundation of your Job Search System
A prioritized list of your top 3 job titles
Marketing You, Pt. 2: Steps 4 & 5 accelerate your progress toward securing your Dream Job through integrating Dream Companies into your Job Search System.
You will research:
Companies in which your Dream Job could materialize
Prime networking candidates affiliated with your Dream Companies
You will develop:
The next phase of your Job Search System by preparing to tap into the 'Shadow Market'
A list of Tier 1 Companies - To keep in your back pocket
A list of five Tier 2 Companies - And affiliated potential contacts for Natural Networking, which you'll learn about in Pt. 3
Marketing You, Pt. 3: Step 6, is where your path toward your Dream Job intersects with the paths of experts in your chosen field.
You will evaluate:
Potential networking connections within your chosen field or companies
The primary questions that you would like to ask them
You will gain proficiency in:
Communicating, scheduling, and following through
And most importantly, Natural Networking Strategy
Marketing You, Pt. 4 walks you through refining your marketing tools for optimized self-representation and communication with potential employers
You will analyze:
Your skillsets, experience, and motivations
You will evaluate:
How those align with your Dream Job and what employers are seeking
You will synthesize your Skillsets, Experience, and Motivations into:
A narrative-based resume
A story-based cover letter
Marketing You, Pt. 5 is all about communicating everything you learn throughout the project - about yourself, the job role, and the potential employer - in a way that propels you to the top of the candidate list.
You will strategize:
How to bypass the traditional application process by networking your way to a VIP invitation to interview
The most effective way to practice interviewing, polish your presentation, and be prepared with substantive answers to interview questions
You will:
Practice, Practice, Practice!
Then dazzle your interviewer with your confidence, detailed but succinct responses, and smart questions for them in return.
