Course Description:
The 6th grade art curriculum introduces students to the fundamentals of drawing and composition. They will also explore principles of design and color theory. Students will be primarily using drawing media to enhance their observational drawing skill level. Students will be introduced to great works from historical and contemporary artists. Students will study these works in a manner focused primarily on understanding the work’s connection to the academic study of drawing. These great works include representational and abstract works. Some of these pieces can be found at local museums so that you may take your child to see works they have studied in class. It would be a great experience for your child to go to the museum and see works of art.
1) Grading:
The four components that make up a student’s overall grade are:
Participation 35%
Most days students are asked to work independently on their artworks. Students are expected to work diligently during class and should assist in taking care of the classroom. During class discussions, students should be actively engaged and offer thoughtful comments that communicate a sense of wonder and depth of inquiry for the techniques and topics discussed. Disrupting the learning environment or not being prepared for class will affect this grade.
Extended Projects 30% (Tests)
Extended projects make up the bulk of students’ grades in studio art. Some drawings may take several weeks to complete. Students will be given a rubric before the beginning of each assignment to make grading as objective and clear as possible. Typically, the criteria for grading most assignments will be based on craftsmanship, composition, accuracy (does it match real life), ability to shade (values), and time management.
Sketchbook assignments 25%
Sketchbooks will be used for notes and learning during class, we will use these every single day. Keeping your sketchbook organized and taking good notes that can help you with your projects will earn you an A.
Written assignments and Art History 10%
Students will be asked to write reflections on their own projects, as well as follow along with an activity while learning art history. Complete sentences and well thought out responses will earn you an A.
2) Policies
Late work:
Students are expected to submit work on time. Assignments for unexcused absences will receive partial credit up to a week after, then will not be graded for any credit. If your student is going to be absent please remember to call it in through the school office or email your teachers.
Absences:
If a student has a planned absence, they are expected to speak with me in advance, to make alternative arrangements. Students will have one extra day to make up their work for each day they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to speak with their teacher in order to find out what they missed.
Open Studio:
If a student schedules with me by asking, I can be in room 113 for tutoring M-F from 7:40 - 8:10 unless I have a meeting scheduled in advance. Parents may email me if needed to set up a tutoring session.
