Fist Fights with the Sunrise

By Katie Jobson

i love the sunset

like i love wiping the slate clean,

with the satisfaction

of going home after working long enough

    that i’ve broken in

the soles of my shoes,

of letting go

(not because i’m ready)

    because it's just too hard

        to hold on too long

            after the stars

                have made their appearance

but maybe,

i really only love the sunset

    because i’ve never known

    anything else.

bright and beautiful

it scorches the horizon

and comes with a price

maybe,

in all the years i’ve lived

    watching the sun struggle

        and fight

and bleed into the night sky,

i never considered

that there is a sadness in ending,

in dying,

    in leaving,

in fighting so hard towards the end

that my knuckles smear red

all over my night sky
