Antonio

By Vincent Sergiacomi

Artwork by Jewel Miller

Antonio is chewing on stale semolina bread.

As his jaw bobs up and down with each motion,

his head shifts slightly,

and the way light climbs into his eyes

changes with each chew.

A kaleidoscope of sooty umbers and vivid mahoganies

is the result.

The earth’s rotation, bobbing Antonio around like a crate of eggs in the back of a graffiti-laden box truck,

never produced such beauty.
