Pomegranate Seeds

By Sierra Tufts-Sicard

Artwork by Carly Maloney

beneath the narcissus

roots tumbled down;

the soil turned to rot.

a chasm opened

with a fierce rumble,

calling me down

to the flaming unknown.

dark gives way to light,

a forbidden intrusion.

i defiled his castle of bone;

my flora littered his realm,

the souls of fauna found me

until all-around grew a field

bright with larkspur and iris.

entranced and entangled

in his sultry seduction,

the darkness beckoned.

i am Hades’ queen

and this is my confession:

i ate those seeds on purpose.

they slid like wine

down my throat–

the sweetest sin.
