The Park on Dapple Road

By Ryan Hiemenz

At the park on Dapple Road,

A squirrel darted between my legs

Through seemingly endless blades of grass.

Beneath a beautiful sugar-maple tree,

Stood a wooden bench,

Withered with age but

Resilient, nonetheless.

I took a seat.

Half expecting the bench to collapse

Instead, it let out a small creak and held.

You sat down beside me,

Grinning fiercely.

A smile crept across my face,

As you laid your head down on my lap.

Those mesmerizing blue eyes

Telling me everything I’ve ever wanted to hear.

Now I sit here,

At the park on Dapple Road,

Alone.

No squirrel getting lost in the green,

No blue eyes for me to get lost in,

No giggling head on my lap,

Definitely no smile.

The tree that once stood tall and proud

Drooped over the bench,

Clinging to it for survival.

The maple and I had that in common.

Tears began rolling

Out of my cold and lifeless eyes,

As I whispered the words:

“I Love You”

Then,

The bench collapsed.
