Cleopatra

By Ryan Hiemenz

Red, pink, orange, yellow, green, teal, blue, purple.

That’s how you organized my highlighters

The last day I saw you.

The order won’t change.

For it is burned into my memory,

As if I was branded by losing you.

The order can’t change.

Because without it,

I’ll lose my last piece of you.

My mind reaches for scraps

of what once was beautiful,

In the heaping ashes of our fallout.

Today could be the day

That I find an excuse to call you.

I need to tell you that I’m sorry.

That I know I pushed you away to the point of no return.

That I can’t replay last fall as much as I’ve tried to.

That I can still feel your hand on the back of my neck

Every time Gale Song plays in my car.

“And he fell apart with his broken heart

And this blood, this blood, this blood

Oh, it drains from my skin, it does”

Brutally ironic

They told us our end

Before we could see it coming.
