A Letter to My Soulmates

By Daijah Patton

So,

Forever friends don’t usually find me

because people have left me too many times and I,

Well, I’ve never trusted easy

I had a feeling y’all were gonna tip toe to fuck up my life, but

In the way that peanut butter goes well with oreos

Something so unexpectedly good, that became amazing

Late night car rides releasing rhythmic raps and straight vibes through

the winds of car windows

If I knew back then

I was wasting my time on friends who wielded their weapons consistently

to tear each other down, instead of lifting each other up

I would’ve fast forwarded to that night:

Four first years, all different origins

Majors varied like fraternal twins

A room filled with colloquial conversation

Brought us together like honeycombs

Binded and unable to be separated on their own

If I go more than four days without talking to you all, I am a deer in headlights

Craving the emotional connection that only you guys can provide

We laugh and we sure as hell cry

We get trashed until we can’t see moonlight,

Tell stories like its bedtime

I wish I could tell you all, I can’t explain it

But you make me feel like that very first bike ride

No wheels kind of pride.

I imagine you beside me, in bridesmaid dresses

Chasing after my children, giggling

Birthday parties, all the mega milestones

My honeys from my home away from home

After all, they say your college friends

Are the ones here

for a lifetime
