Cross Section Tool

This cross-section cutting tool was created to view interpreted stratigraphic layers and wells for any site. The data presented (fictional town) can be from a database, a series of GIS layers, a 3D Geomodel, or a numerical groundwater model. This tool brings interpreted stratigraphic surfaces to life, putting it in the hands of decision makers and anyone interested in visualizing subsurface interpretation or borehole data. Cross-sections can be drawn by the user quickly and easily within a user's web browser, removing the need for specialized cross-section software packages. Well screen locations, observed water level elevations, chemistry data, geologic picks and similar data (unlimited) can all be readily displayed in cross-section.

Plan View Map / Figure:

1. Left-click anywhere within the model area, then click again to generate the next vertex of your cross section line. The red line illustrates the cross-section location; the cross-section's start location (first single click) will be illustrated on the left hand side of the cross-section, and subsequent left-clicks of the mouse will append the interpreted layer structure to the right.

2. To draw a new cross-section with a different orientation, use the red “reset” button beneath the cross-section display window.

Additional Features:

  • The drop down menu at the top can be used to view the gridded elevation of the different stratigraphic surfaces.

  • Click and drag using the “Pan” tool on the right hand side of the map (it is enabled by default).

  • Zoom in/out using the mouse scroll wheel (box select zoom tool can be used as an alternative for users without a mouse).

  • Hover over points to view the fictional municipal wells and monitoring wells.

Cross Section Figure:

1. Zoom in and out using the scroll wheel (box select zoom tool can be used as an alternative for users without a mouse), or within the y-axis/x-axis area to modify the cross-section’s vertical exaggeration.

2. Hover over the various units on the cross-section to display the interpreted unit top/thickness, or hover over the wells to see their screen location, pumping rate or observed water level. When the user hovers over a well screen on the cross-section, a purple dot is displayed on the plan view map above the cross-section (and vice versa) to help orient the user.

A “Reset” button (right hand side of each image) will reset the zoom of the image, but will not clear the currently rendered cross-section.
