Letter from the SMI
Rio Grande High School established its Marine Corps JROTC program on May 10th 1971. As an elective course, it uses the Marine Corps framework for developing cadet's self-discipline, leadership, and confidence. The values of the Corps of Cadets reflect those of the Marine Corps; Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
Marine Corps JROTC instills the values of citizenship, personal growth and responsibility, public service, and career exploration. These basic areas are developed through classroom instruction, physical fitness training, close order drill, marksmanship, and demonstration of leadership principles. It prepares cadets for responsible leadership roles, while making them aware of their rights, responsibility, and privileges as American citizens.
Parents, principals, teachers and school administrators know and see the value of the program and understand that it: “Motivates students to learn,” “Fosters a disciplined and constructive learning environment,” and “Instills essential skills like time organization, responsibility, goal setting, and teamwork.”
We welcome every enthusiastic, determined, engaging, and patriotic student that wants to lead others, be part of a family of go-getters, and have fun.
Semper Fidelis,
Senior Marine Instructor
